The harp

The harp is one of the oldest known instruments. The earliest references to the instrument dates back to Mesopotamia, 3000 BC. The harp is mentioned in the Bible – King David played the harp – and in ancient tales. Mural paintings from ancient Egypt also depict the harp.
Since antiquity, the harp has developed in many different cultures around the world. Numerous paintings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance show the harp, often played by an angel.
From medieval Al-Andalus we have testimonies from the 12. Century Tunesian writer Ahmad al-Tifasi of the use of harp-like instruments such as rûta, related to the Persian jank.
